The Shift Towards Natural Farming

The Indian government has launched a massive initiative to transition 1 crore (10 million) farmers to natural farming practices over the next few years. This policy shift acknowledges the diminishing returns and severe ecological consequences of the Green Revolution model, which heavily relied on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and intensive irrigation.

What is Natural Farming?

Natural farming is an agroecological approach that completely eliminates the use of synthetic chemical inputs. Unlike organic farming, which sometimes relies on off-farm purchased organic fertilizers (like vermicompost), natural farming emphasizes utilizing on-farm resources and bio-inoculants to rejuvenate soil biology and promote plant health.

Key Pillars of Natural Farming (Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati)

The approach is heavily inspired by indigenous models like Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF), which rests on four main pillars:

  • Jivamrita: A fermented microbial culture made from cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, pulse flour, and soil. It acts as a catalytic agent to promote microbial activity in the soil.
  • Bijamrita: A seed treatment mix used to protect young roots from fungus and soil-borne diseases.
  • Acchadana (Mulching): Covering the topsoil with crop residues or cover crops to conserve moisture, control weeds, and provide organic matter.
  • Whapasa (Moisture): Ensuring a specific microclimate in the soil that provides a balance of air and water molecules, rather than intensive irrigation.

Ecological and Economic Benefits

  • Soil Health: Restores soil organic carbon, improves microbial biodiversity, and enhances water retention capacity.
  • Climate Resilience: Crops are more resilient to extreme weather events like droughts, as healthier soils retain moisture better.
  • Economic Viability: By drastically reducing the need to purchase external chemical inputs, the cost of cultivation drops significantly, preventing farmers from falling into debt traps.
  • Human Health: Produces chemical-free, nutritious food, reducing the health risks associated with pesticide residues in the food chain.
